Catering Trainer

Rate of pay: $10.00/hour

Work location: Iowa Memorial Union - 236 IMU

What you will learn

You can expect to learn skills such as time management, conflict resolution, balancing priorities, attention to detail, interpersonal communication, customer service experience, and working with people from diverse backgrounds and working as part of a team. Although your job in the Division of Student Life may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learn here will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.

Basic job function

Responsible for training and preparing new employees for their position within University Catering.


  • Provide on-the-job training for assigned student employees.
  • Direct and inspect the work of assigned student employees. 
  • Ensure that assigned event space is ready for service prior to guest arrival.
  • Respond to inquiries from customers in a positive and professional manner.
  • Direct and inspect the cleaning and sanitation of work area for assigned student employees.  Ensure work area and equipment is clean and orderly at the close of the shift.
  • Direct and inspect the proper labeling and storage of food items following service for assigned student employees.
  • Gather feedback on evaluation form from trainees after each scheduled shift.  Provide evaluation form to Catering Supervisor or designee.
  • Help design and develop training programs to fit the needs of our student employees.
  • Provide training plans and event schedule to new employees.
  • Stay up-to-date on new training methods and techniques by attending scheduled meetings with Catering Supervisor or designee.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


  • Minimum of one semester with University Catering or equivalent experience.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Enrolled as a UI student during the academic year.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to move up to 50 lbs. and stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work evenings, early mornings, and weekends and be flexible in scheduling from week to week.
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written) and be positive and respectful in working with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated commitment to GREAT customer service.
