Building Assistant

Rate of pay: $13.50/hour

Basic job function

Act as Manager on Duty (MOD) in place of Facility Coordinators and/or to assist with large scale events.  Functionally supervise set-up, crew leads and custodial crew to ensure daily building tasks are completed as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Unlock building, Danforth Chapel, meeting rooms and event spaces as scheduled dictates.  Record usage and any irregularities on the building schedule. Post building schedule and change event signage as scheduled.
  • Assist in the coordination, direction and/or participate in the work of the set-up crew ensuring proper set up of all scheduled facilities, reporting problems or concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • Perform equipment checks on all AV equipment in the meeting and event spaces.  Notify Facility Manager of any concerns.
  • Provide tours to prospective clients, answering questions, and referring to appropriate offices as needed.
  • Respond to requests made by the Iowa House in response to needs of guests or in responding to questions regarding authorization for key check out.
  • Facilitate emergency cash requests for all commercial outlets within the Union as needed.
  • Assist with maintaining the ITC’s by restocking paper and reporting repair needs and responding to operational requests as appropriate.
  • Respond to building emergencies, i.e., security alarms, building evacuation, personal injuries, etc.  Assist with opening and closing the IMU and access to secured areas as needed within the established guidelines
  • Prepare accurate shift reports to include operational and event activities, unusual/irregular concerns and maintenance and equipment repair needs.
  • Respond to building and mechanical concerns, as well as, performing equipment checks as assigned. 
  • Maintain inventory lists for AV equipment, event equipment, and general building furniture/fixtures.  Notify Facility Manager in reports of any concerns or shortages.
  • Prepare reports of building recommendations or improvements to facility or service guidelines.
  • Train set-up crew and crew leads as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be open to work a flexible schedule of days, nights and weekends with hours ranging from 6:00 AM in the morning to 3:00 AM at night.
  • Ability to work independently and follow written and verbal instruction.
  • Ability to climb ladders and operate powered lifts after proper training received.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and leadership skills are required.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills are necessary.
  • Six months of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Experience putting into operation various pieces of audio visual equipment (PA systems, slide/overhead projects, LCD projectors, computers, TV/VCR/DVD players,etc.) is preferred.
  • One year commitment required.
  • Six months of IMU Event Services employment is required.
