Customer Service Representative

Rate of pay: $10.40/hour

Work location: Iowa Memorial Union

What you will learn

You can expect to learn skills such as time management, conflict resolution, balancing priorities, managing finances, interpersonal communication, customer service experience, and working with people from diverse backgrounds and working as part of a team.  Although your job in the Division of Student Life may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learn here will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.

Basic job function

Provide exceptional customer service to Iowa Memorial Union visitors, students, and University community by providing information and event-related services.


  • Provide exceptional customer service.
  • Serve as an Iowa Memorial Union liaison and point of contact for all guests.
  • Represent the IMU and the University to the public in a respectful, courteous, and helpful manner.
  • Look for opportunities to welcome guests and provide assistance.
  • Be observant of people and of the facility; make note of, and respond to any concerns.
  • Project a positive and helpful attitude.
  • Serve as a central point of communication for the operations and services of the IMU.
  • Be available and respond immediately to requests via staff radio.
  • Report any safety or facility issues immediately to appropriate personnel.
  • Report any program, department, University, or state policy concerns immediately to appropriate personnel.
  • Resolve any on-site inquiries, conflict situations and concerns in a professional manner.
  • Review the daily Activity Schedule and be aware of all events occurring during your shift; anticipate needs.
  • Complete appropriate forms as necessary.
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and in-services.
  • Follow all cash handling policies and procedures.
  • Sell tickets using the cash register and cash boxes.
  • Operate all office equipment and systems including ticketing.
  • Maintain the security of tickets and cash.
  • Perform event services functions including ticket taking.
  • Prepare ticket sales reports and University Money Received Forms.
  • Gather information to maintain information resources.
  • Perform routine clerical tasks to maintain operations and services.
  • Perform special projects as assigned.


  • Registered University of Iowa student; work-study preferred.
  • Reasonable work experience in a customer service position.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to respond effectively to customer concerns in a positive manner.
  • Effective communication, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to create and maintain a professional and safe environment.
  • Ability to uphold departmental policies in stressful situations.
  • Ability to recognize risks and implement departmental risk management procedures.
  • Ability to respond calmly to emergencies in the building.
  • Cashier experience preferred.
