Customer Service Representative - Hawk Shop

Rate of pay: $10.40/hour

Work location: Iowa Memorial Union

You can expect to learn skills such as time management, conflict resolution, balancing priorities, managing finances, interpersonal communication, customer service experience, and working with people from diverse backgrounds and working as part of a team.  Although your job in the Division of Student Life may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learn here will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.

Basic job function

Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers of the Iowa Hawk Shop.


  • Take phone orders, handle customer special transactions, transfer telephone calls as appropriate, handle web order pickup, and generally assist customers of the Hawk Shop.
  • Operate the cash register at service desk: handle customer refunds, exchanges, rental textbook check in and occasional sales
  • Answer high volume incoming email and phone calls.
  • Place merchandise orders using EPOS and Hawk Shop website.
  • Handle confidential credit card information.
  • Represent the IMU and university to the public in a respectful, courteous, and helpful manner.
  • Resolve inquiries, conflict situations and concerns in a professional manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Must be flexible and available to work weekends, nights, holidays, and football weekends.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service and ability to present self in a friendly, pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Experience in a retail or customer service environment is desirable.
  • Good communication skills are necessary (strong English skills).
  • Registered University of Iowa student
  • Ability to respond effectively to customer concerns in a positive manner.
  • Ability to create and maintain a professional and safe environment.
  • Ability to uphold departmental policies in stressful situations.
  • Cashier experience preferred.
