Event Associate

Rate of pay: $10.40/hour

Work location: Hawk Shop - Iowa Memorial Union

You can expect to learn skills such as time management, conflict resolution, balancing priorities, managing finances, interpersonal communication, customer service experience, and working with people from diverse backgrounds and working as part of a team.  Although your job in the Division of Student Life may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learn here will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.

Basic job function

Assists with all functions of event operations as assigned. Participate in planning and preparing for event. Responsibilities will include assisting with set up, take down and cleaning of event as well as assisting customers with sales and inventory during event. 


  • Assist with set up, running and close down event merchandise and fixtures.
  • Follow event policies and procedures.
  • Function as Hawk Shop liaison with event coordinators and personnel.
  • Multi-tasking: must be able to assist customers by answering general questions, directing individuals as needed, and answer phone inquiries at the same time.
  • May occasionally work in main store location


  • Some retail experience preferred. Cash register experience preferred.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
  • Customer service experience preferred. Good communication (STRONG ENGLISH SKILLS) and organizational skills are necessary. 
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service and ability to present self in a friendly, pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Self-reliance to exercise the independent judgment necessary to function on their own (without immediate supervision.) 
  • Demonstrated ability to handle difficult situations is necessary.
  • Ability to work independently. Follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 40 pounds
  • Able to travel to work events in town, in state and other locations if necessary
  • Able to drive University vehicle if necessary
