Student Manager - Hawk Shop

Rate of pay: $10.70/hour

Work location: Iowa Memorial Union

Basic job function

Manages and is responsible for all functions of store operation on nights, weekends, and as assigned.


  • Each student manager has a set of keys to the store and an alarm code so they may open and close the store. Involves securing the store itself and the cash drawer.  Expected to take responsibility for opening and closing store on time.
  • Sets up, close, and cash register system.
  • Supervise all departmental personnel in the store on weekends and nights, making sure all departments and areas are staffed properly.
  • Monitor all functions of the retail and operational departments.
  • Assist departmental and area supervisory personnel during peak business periods or assume duties in the event of their absence.
  • Maintain daily observation reports for assigned departments.
  • Interpret and enforce store policies and procedures.
  • Handles security problems, and customer service problems and complaints, and any general or store emergency.
  • Function as store liaison with IMU building weekend/night personnel in the event of an emergency, or when requiring maintenance or custodial assistance.
  • Multi-tasking: must be able to assist customers by answering general questions, directing individuals to proper departments, and answer phone inquiries at the same time.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Some retail experience required. Must have cash register experience.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends.
  • Some retail supervisory experience or demonstrated aptitude for supervision, customer service experience, and good communication and organizational skills are necessary.
  • Self-reliance to exercise the independent judgment necessary to function on their own (without immediate supervision.)
  • Demonstrated ability to handle difficult situations is necessary.
