Personal Computer Technician

Rate of pay: $13.40/hour

Work location: Iowa Memorial Union

You can expect to learn skills such as time management, conflict resolution, balancing priorities, managing finances, interpersonal communication, customer service experience, and working with people from diverse backgrounds and working as part of a team.  Although your job in the Division of Student Life may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learn here will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.

Basic job function

To install, configure, install and maintain personal computers and printers for the Iowa Memorial Union and associated organizations.


  • Install, configure and upgrade PC, Apple, and printer hardware.
  • Install, configure and upgrade Windows and OSX operating systems.
  • Install, configure and upgrade application software.
  • Install, configure and upgrade security software.
  • Join Windows and OSX systems to campus Active Directory.
  • Troubleshoot PC, Apple, and printer hardware issues.
  • Troubleshoot Windows and OSX issues.
  • Troubleshoot Windows and OSX application software issues.
  • Apply secure data removal methods to personal computers.
  • Maintain equipment inventory and software license records.
  • Online research and purchase of upgrade components.
  • Document installation procedures and policies.
  • Assist with end user support.


  • Must meet the UI Fleet Safety requirements to drive UI Vehicles.
  • Must submit resume and cover letter along with application & be able to commit to 1 yr or more.
  • Experience with installing, configuring and troubleshooting Windows OS and applications required.
  • Working knowledge of PC hardware & experience working inside PC’s required.
  • Good written and oral communication skills required.
  • Understanding of security best practices is required.
  • Student in computer science or MIS preferred.
  • Experience installing and configuring Macintosh, OS and applications & printers is desirable.
  • Ability to work independently highly desirable
  • Understanding of Active Directory and SCCM is highly desirable.
