Sales Associate - Hawk Shop

Rate of pay: $10.10/hour

Work location: Iowa Memorial Union

You can expect to learn skills such as time management, conflict resolution, balancing priorities, managing finances, interpersonal communication, customer service experience, and working with people from diverse backgrounds and working as part of a team.  Although your job in the Division of Student Life may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learn here will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.

Basic job function

Assist in all aspects of retail operations by helping customers with locating desired merchandise, answering questions, keeping retail area presentable, and stocking merchandise.   


  • Provide assistance to customers in answering questions and locating desired merchandise in primary area of assignment and other departments of the store.
  • Assist with managing product inventory by helping with merchandise set up, checking back stock, restocking, taking inventory, and managing the product storage.
  • Participate in keeping the retail floor presentable by removing product and dusting shelves, cleaning product as necessary, keeping stock replenished, and vacuuming as needed.
  • Maintain product awareness by attending staff training sessions, reading related literature, and on the job training.
  • Assist in the preparation of special promotions or projects.
  • Participate in assisting other departments of the bookstore including operating the cash register in ringing up sales, helping with backpack checking during rush periods, and seasonal gift wrapping.
  • Assist during textbook buyback, sorting, and pricing.
  • Providing price/availability information for customers:
    • -requires knowledge of distributor database
    • -requires knowledge of UBS in-house computer system
  • Multitasking: must be able to assist customers by answering general questions, directing individuals to proper departments, and answering phone inquiries.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Cash register experience desired.
  • Commitment to providing good customer service and ability to present self in a friendly, pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Experience in a retail or customer service environment is desirable.
  • Good communication skills are necessary. (STRONG ENGLISH SKILLS)
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 40 pounds is necessary.
