Maintenance Assistant

Rate of pay: $8.50/hour

Work location: Campus Recreation & Wellness Center, Field House, and Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center

What you will learn

You can expect to learn skills such as time management, collaborating with others to achieve shared goals, mechanical aptitude, and working with people from diverse backgrounds as well as part of a team. Although your job in the Division of Student Life may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learn here will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.

Basic job function

To assist in the day to day maintenance of all Recreational Services facilities, equipment and grounds for the benefit of the members and the university community.


  • Assist with preventative maintenance and general repair of fitness equipment including prescribed routine cleaning and inspection of equipment.
  • Assist with event set-up and tear down.
  • Assist with outdoor field and grounds maintenance responsibilities.
  • Assist with locker maintenance.
  • Keep facilities in excellent condition while also providing great customer service to our members.
  • Works cooperatively with other area of the department to achieve established goals.
  • Knowledge of all policies and procedures of the facilities.
  • Promotes a safe, clean, and functional environment.
  • Mandatory attendance at training meetings.
  • Performs other work as assigned.

Training requirements

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Services requirements, preferred
