Matwork & Reformer Pilates Instructor

Rate of pay: Dependent upon years of experience, training, and certification

Work location: Campus Recreation & Wellness Center and/or Field House

What you will learn

You can expect to learn skills such as time management, wellness, customer service experience, and working with people from diverse backgrounds as well as part of a team.  Although your job in the Division of Student Life may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learn here will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.

Basic job function

To provide a safe, comfortable, and motivating class/practice for all fitness levels. The applicant must have the ability to demonstrate sound judgment, and to promote and deliver courteous, efficient, and memorable service one to one or in a group setting.  The Mind and Body Instructor must have a genuine interest in, not only the development of fitness but also the well-being of our staff, members and guests.


  • Enforces facility policies and procedures (accessibility issues, rules of activity).
  • Works cooperatively with other area of the department to achieve established goals. Driven to learn the names of participants who attend your classes.
  • Dressing appropriately for teaching exercise classes.
  • Must be able to think independently and develop safe and effective sequences for teaching various exercise class to all fitness levels.
  • Must be alert and aware of signs of exercise-induced distress.
  • Willingness to seek out educational (such as keeping up-to-date on safety and fitness trends) and sharing this information with your class participants
  • Motivating class participants to the best of your ability.
  • Noting new participants and sharing basic exercise information with them.
  • Instructors should provide an effective, safe, and challenging workout routine for the type of exercise class that they are instructing.
  • Reporting any equipment/facility problems to their direct supervisor.


  • Knowledge and understanding of fitness principles and their application to the group setting.
  • Outstanding customer service skills; must have excellent written and oral communication
  • Must be well-organized and prepared to teach classes.
  • Must be in excellent physical condition to teach classes.
  • Ability to interact with diverse groups through a variety of situations.
  • Mandatory attendance at meetings, seminars, trainings, and functions as scheduled.
  • Ability to use independent judgment when needed.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to accommodate a variable work schedule that may include early mornings, late evening and weekends.

Training requirements

  • Certifications in CPR/AED or willingness to obtain.
  • Complete Bloodborne Pathogens Training.
  • Completion of Mat Pilates Required, Reformer Training preferred.
