Personal Training Coordinator

Rate of pay: $20.00/hour

Work location: Campus Recreation & Wellness Center

You can expect to learn skills such as time management, conflict resolution, balancing priorities, attention to detail, interpersonal communication, customer service experience, and working with people from diverse backgrounds and working as part of a team. Although your job in the Division of Student Life may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learn here will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.

Basic job function

To assist in new initiatives, pilot programs, and program development in the Personal Training Program. To design, oversee and coach the pre-employment program. To advertise and provide oversight of the Personal Training Program Intern. 


  • Create student referral program for personal training services
  • Collaborate with campus/DSL departments to design new programming efforts
  • Relationship building and collaboration efforts across campus to increase referrals to personal training
  • Design, collaborate and manage pilot programs for special populations
  • Develop, design and lead pre-employment program for interested candidates
  • Assist with strategic planning for the Personal Training Program
  • Provide direct oversight and supervision of Personal Training Program Intern(s)
  • Assist with continuing education program development
  • Design and deliver presentations across campus
  • Act as a Recreational Services representative across campus
  • Attend weekly meetings with Assistant Director, attend bi-weekly All Staff Meetings



  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science or related field
  • Extensive knowledge of personal training concepts, including coaching, assessing, retaining
  • Ability to educate, motivate and guide others to be successful in the field of Personal Training
  • Five years or more providing successful personal training
  • Strong leadership, presentation and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated
  • Work with confidential information
  • Ability to physically exert and lift for weightlifting instruction


  • Master’s degree in Sport and Recreation Management, Exercise Science or Student Affairs Administration
  • Advanced certifications in coaching/personal training

Training requirements

  • Criminal Background Check upon hire
  • Minors on Campus
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
  • Completion of University of Iowa Bloodborne Pathogens training
  • HIPPA certified
  • Nationally recognized Personal training/coaching certification
