Catering Lead

Rate of pay: $10.53/hour

Basic job function

Responsible for the daily operation of scheduled shifts.  Make independent decisions and exercise good judgment in absence of a supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate activities of catering staff including timely set-up, service, and clean-up of catering events.
  • Train, direct and inspect the work of student staff.  Organize work schedules to ensure that all work assignments are covered.  Phone employees when necessary.  Document information regarding tardiness, absences, and work performance for catering supervisors.
  • Provide leadership and serve as professional role model.
  • Monitor consumption of alcoholic beverages and ensure legal age requirements. Request proper identification prior to service alcohol.
  • Responsible for checking out keys to open food areas and equipment, return keys at close of shift after securing area.
  • Responsible for securing money bags during events and at close of the shift.
  • Reconcile charge slips and cash according to established guidelines and procedures.
  • Direct and participate in cleaning and sanitation of work area.  Ensure work area and equipment is clean and orderly at the close of the shift.
  • Direct and participate in the proper labeling and storage of food items following service.
  • Keep storage areas clean and in proper working order.
  • Handle requests and inquiries from customers in a positive manner.
  • Serve as contact for customers when supervisor is unavailable, providing high level of customer service.
  • Record information for production, billing, and inventory control.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings.
  • May make deliveries using University vehicle to designated areas.
  • Record information needed for production or billing.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one semester with University Catering or equivalent experience.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain the University Fleet Safety Program driving standards.
  • Enrolled as a UI student during the academic year.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to move up to 50 lbs. and stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work evenings, early mornings, and weekends and be flexible in scheduling from week to week.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and be positive and respectful in working with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated commitment to GREAT customer service.

Work hours

  • This position is limited to up to 20 hours per week (320 hours per semester). May work up to 40 hours per week during break periods (spring, summer, fall and winter) as assigned.
  • Position includes evening, early morning and weekend hours.
