Catering Office Assistant

Rate of pay: $9.50/hour

Work location: Iowa Memorial Union

What you will learn

You can expect to learn skills such as time management, conflict resolution, balancing priorities, attention to detail, interpersonal communication, customer service experience, and working with people from diverse backgrounds and working as part of a team.  Although your job in the Division of Student Life may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learn here will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.

Basic job function

Assist in the day-to-day operations of the University Catering Office including, answering & directing incoming phone calls, taking messages, greeting incoming appointments and visitors, data entry, updating on-line website, light filing, and performing additional tasks as assigned.


  • Answer phone and assist callers in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Cheerfully greet customers and refer to appropriate University Catering Sales Coordinator.
  • Calmly assist customers with last minute requests or needs for any meeting that might be currently taking place.
  • Insert Data entry of Inventory.
  • Upload and convert training documents & videos to on-line website.
  • Type event signs daily.
  • Print and file event sheets into staff binders.
  • Eagerness to perform other duties as assigned.


  • Enrolled as a student at The University of Iowa (during academic year). 
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and be positive and respectful in working with a diverse population.
  • Reasonable experience in using computers, including Word, Excel, and email.
  • Reasonable experience in handling multiple assignments, conflicting demands or priorities.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to GREAT customer service.
  • Prior bookkeeping experience is desirable.
  • Knowledge of University Dining procedures and policies is desirable.
