Maintenance Helper

Rate of pay: $11.56/hour

Basic job function

Assist Facilities Mechanics, Environmental Systems Mechanics and Systems Control Technicians with repairs and preventive maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and service smoke detectors.
  • Change air filters.
  • Replace window air conditioners.
  • Clean cooling coils and equipment.
  • Repair window screens.
  • Unplug sinks, stools and urinals.
  • Assist with fire panel checks.
  • Glue and lay floor tile.
  • Replace cabinet fronts.
  • Change faucet stems.
  • Lube doors and windows.
  • Replace electrical receptacle plates. 
  • Assist in testing, maintenance and cleaning of low voltage electronics, such as card access cameras and fire alarms.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must pass criminal background check.
  • A valid driver’s license and meet and maintain the University Fleet Safety Program driving standard is preferred.
  • Must be enrolled as University of Iowa student (during academic year).
  • Must be able to move up to 50 pounds and stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be reliable and dependable.
  • Must be motivated self-starter and able to complete tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision.

Work hours

  • Up to 20 hours per week between 8:00am and 4:30pm, Monday-Friday

Training requirements

  • Personal Protective Equipment Training for Facilities Students
  • Hazard Communication Training for Facilities Students
  • Minors on Campus
