Risk Management Assistant

Rate of pay: $10.00/hour

Work location: Campus Recreation & Wellness Center, Field House, and Hawkeye Tennis Recreation Center

What you will learn

You can expect to learn skills such as time management, balancing priorities, attention to detail and public speaking while being an integral part of implementing and evaluating an effective emergency response plan.

Basic job function

To assist with safety and risk management compliance within the department including, but not limited to, the instruction of first aid and CPR courses to staff and public; and evaluation of the staffs knowledge on the activation of the Recreational Services Emergency Preparedness Plan and hard skills regarding the application of First Aid, CPR and AED use.


  • Coordinating with Recreational Services professional staff to schedule audits during work shifts.
  • Conduct Emergency Preparedness Audits based upon standards set by the Recreational Services Risk Management Committee.
  • Provide feedback to individuals regarding their performance during the audit process.
  • Complete audit forms and provide written summaries of audits to the Safety & Risk Manager.
  • Conduct regular remedial training courses.
  • Assist with instruction of HeartSaver First Aid, CPR and AED courses as required.
  • Ensure outstanding customer service.
  • Work cooperatively with other area of the department to achieve established goals.
  • Performs other work as assigned.


  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Service requirements.
  • Experience working in a leadership role and comfortable working without direct supervision.
  • Experience exercising independent judgment.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Ability to work early morning, evening and weekend hours.
  • Previous recreational services experience is desirable.

Training requirements

  • Criminal Background Check upon hire
  • CPR/AED/ First Aid  Certification
  • Completion of University of Iowa Bloodborne Pathogens training
  • Recreational Service Orientation
