Youth Climbing Team Leader

Rate of pay: $8.60/hour

Work location: Campus Recreation & Wellness Center (CRWC)

Basic job function

Has primary responsibility for youth special events including scheduling, arranging practices and lesson plans.  Assist in the day to day management of the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center (CRWC) Climbing Wall.  This position requires a mature individual with good communication and leadership skills.  


  • Coordinate youth events; staff scheduling, climbing practices and lesson plans while working closely with climbing wall student supervisor, staff and Assistant Director. 
  • Enforces facility policies and procedures (accessibility issues, rules of activity).
  • Carries out security measures (proper opening and closing duties, accountability for youth climbers, climbing area, equipment handling etc.).
  • Responds to all building emergencies (Accidents/Injuries, Inclement Weather, etc)
  • Assist in the training, supervision and evaluation of entry-level student climbing wall staff and youth climbing team coaches.
  • Greets climbers while checking them into the climbing area.
  • Supervise the wall.
  • Instruct climbing lessons.
  • Administer safety checks, risk management control, and maintain a safe climbing area.
  • Assist with LLS climbing classes.
  • Instruct lead climbing lessons.
  • Provides support for special events, as needed.
  • Ensures outstanding customer service.
  • Works cooperatively with other areas of the department to achieve established goals.
  • Promotes a safe, clean, functional and marketable facility.
  • Performs other work as assigned.


  • Previous employment with the Department of Recreational Services.
  • Lead climbing experience.
  • Outstanding customer service skills; competent computer and audio-visual skills.
  • Ability to interact with diverse groups through a variety of situations.
  • Mandatory attendance at monthly staff meetings.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and good judgment.
  • A passion for the outdoors!

Work hours

  • Must be able to accommodate a variable work schedule that may include early mornings, late evening and weekends.

Training requirements

  • Criminal Background Check upon hire
  • CPR/AED/ First Aid  Certification
  • Completion of University of Iowa Bloodborne Pathogens training
  • Recreational Service Orientation
